The City Gates
The City Gates fan-expansion was originally designed by PresetM
as 24 C1 city tiles with at least one edge of each tile designed
as a City Gate which can be placed next to either a Road, a Field, or
another City Gate tile edge, but the City Gate cannot be placed next
to a standard city tile edge. This expansion was originally released by
HiG in 2015. The C2 tiles were first published by Snearone
in a Carcassonne Central forum post on April 08, 2022. Hold your mouse
over City Gate image on the right side of this page to see the original
C1 tiles.
The tiles are placed following the basic rules of Carcassonne. Note
the following special features:
On the side of a tile, on which there is a city gate, either
a farm or a road may be placed.
It is also allowed to place another city gate. In this case,
the 2 cities are not connected by the city gates.
|
|
Example: On this tile with 3 city gates all possibilities for
placing are shown:
1 At the left gate another city gate was built, but both parts of the
city are separated
2 The lower gate borders on a farm
3 The right gate borders on a road

The rules of the Carcassonne basic game apply to the placement of a
follower. No followers are placed on the city gates on the edge of
the tile. On the small farms next to the city gates, however,
followers may be used as farmers.
Note: Your meeple can also be placed on the Garden or
Monastery that exists on the tile you just placed.
The rules of the Carcassonne Basic Game apply to scoring during the
game. It is important to know that a road is also limited by a city
gate. This can lead to a finished road consisting of only 1 road
section.
|
|
Example: On the left side, a city gate will be placed against
the road. The road is now finished and Red
gets 1 point for it.
|
For this landscape tile with 4 city gates, the following
different scoring applies: If the player places a follower in the
city after placing the tile, a scoring takes place immediately,
since the city is closed. The player receives 4 points and
immediately takes his follower back into his supply.

Final scoring
The rules of the Carcassonne basic game apply to the final
scoring.
Exp. 2 - Traders & Builders:
If a player closes one of the ends of a road with a city gate, and
his or her builder is on the road, the road does not get
"extended" by the city gate, so the player is not granted a
double turn.
Exp. 3 - The Princess & the Dragon
Exp. 8 - Bridges, Castles & Bazaars
Monastery in a city: If you choose to place a meeple on this
tile, you must choose whether to place it in the city, or on the
monastery. If you wish, you may lay the meeple down on the monastery
to differentiate a monk from a knight within the city.

During our normal games, we often find ourselves in the position
where we need 2 more tiles to close the city that we have been
working on, and many times, we also have our builder on that city.
Whichever tile we decide to place first, will require that the
second tile matches the board on two sides.
If we can place the first tile with a City Gate pointing to the
second tile's position, we have just increase our odds for a match
by a factor of three!

Clarifications for new landscape tiles
|
|
|
Bridged City: Similiar to the dual city images connected by a
bridge in the standard
river II tiles, the city images at the top and bottom of this City Gate
tile is considered to be just one city, not two separate cities. |
|
|
|
|
|
Tunnel Road: Similiar to the Abbey & Mayor tile, the road on this
tile is unbroken. The top part of the road separates two fields, the
lower part does not. This is important for field scoring. |

|
|
Single tile city: This tile is unique to the City
Gates expansion. When placing this tile, IF, you have an
available meeple
before placing this tile, you can then place your meeple on the city and
score an instant 4 points, not just the standard 1 tile times 2
points, and return your meeple back to your stack! |
|
|
|
Monastery in a city: Similiar to the Dragon tile, if you choose
to place a meeple on this tile, you must choose whether to place it in
the city or on the monastery. If you wish, you may lay the meeple down
on the monastery to differentiate a monk from a knight within the city.
The monastery is complete when it is surrounded by tiles, even if the
city is still under construction. You may place a monk on this monastery
when knights are already present in the city. Likewise, a monk placed on
this monastery does not prevent a player from placing a knight in the
same city. |
